What is a PAVA system?
A PAVA (Public Address and Voice Alarm) system is an integrated emergency communication system that uses clear spoken messages – rather than conventional bells or sirens – to guide building occupants during emergencies, such as fires and security alerts. It combines everyday public announcements with voice evacuation messaging and, while widely used in large, complex buildings, it is equally effective in smaller environments like retail stores, where customers are unfamiliar with the space.
Can PAVA systems be used for non-emergency purposes?
Yes, PAVA systems are ideal for secondary uses like paging (Tannoy) and background music, due to their extensive high-quality loudspeaker networks. On top of this, PAVA intelligibility requirements dictate that you must be able to understand, not just hear, a message, meaning that they often offer better audio quality and coverage than a traditional Tannoy or public address system.
Are PAVA systems more effective than conventional bells and sounders?
The simple answer is yes, but there is more to it than that.
Whilst numerous studies have shown that voice evacuation messages can reduce pre-movement time by up to 30% in comparison to traditional alarms, leading to more orderly and efficient evacuations. They deliver clear, targeted evacuation instructions that guide occupants to safety, reducing confusion and panic.
On top of this, the use of incident-specific messages greatly increases the flexibility of emergency systems, delivering relevant instructions that may not occur to the listener – for instance, a bomb alert message may instruct listeners to stay inside a building rather than exiting into the danger zone.
Zoned PAVA systems can also direct messages to specific areas, ensuring that only affected zones receive instructions. Such directed communication is crucial in evacuation scenarios, where escape routes and stairwells may have limited space.
Do PAVA systems need to be maintained?
Where PAVA systems are utilised, they constitute the primary form of evacuation and need to be maintained in much the same manner as a gas or fire alarm system. In fact, BS EN 5839 – the primary standard for fire detection and alarm systems – has a section exclusively dedicated to PAVA in which it is advised that they need to be maintained by a suitably qualified person once or twice a year.
Do stadium and arena PAVA systems have to meet the same standards as other buildings?
Stadiums and arena do need to meet the same standards as other buildings but, given the nature of these structures, there are further, more specific standards that they must meet. These standards include the ‘Green Guide: Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds’ and ‘BS EN 60849:1998 – Sound systems for emergency purposes’.
