Making The Match Day Experience
When LUFC approached us with the brief to upgrade their PAVA system, we were faced with an interesting acoustic challenge: how do you create a seamless sound when each separate stand is totally different? But, together with Martin Audio’s new TORUS arrays, we were able to answer every question the stadium environment asked of us – creating an unforgettable match day experience while still meeting the safety standards.
The central advantage of TORUS arrays is how light they are, which allows them to be raised and lowered in the Bowl without having to bring in lifting equipment, while still delivering performance. This is especially advantageous in an environment like Elland Road, where you cannot place too much weight on the front of the older stands.

We made sure when we created the design – using DISPLAY 3 – that the direct SPL was the key. At the end of the day, when the stadium is full of people, precise SPL coverage makes all the difference in getting over the top of a very loud crowd.
Now, each of the stands have TORUS arrays in them, which allows us to put subs in the hang configuration. We installed these every second array in each stand, apart from the East. The East Stand instead comprises six triple TORUS arrays, each equipped with a sub, in addition to double TORUS arrays for the top tier. The North Stand is made up of six TORUS arrays; the West Stand eight, with CDD 12s across the back due to a physical barrier; and the South six. On top of this, each corner of the stadium has further triple TORUS arrays to allow for seamless sound throughout the site.
“Quote about how good the job was!”
